Montrachet

During the French Revolution, the parcel of « Le Montrachet » was the unique property of Clermont-Montoison. It was then divided between the local farmers. Today, the Grand Cru “Montrachet” is situated between the towns of Puligny-Montrachet and Chassagne-Montrachet and has several owners. The soil produces extraordinary white wines, only coming from the Chardonnay grapes, king of the white Burgundy grapes. The “Montrachet” is surrounded by other very famous parcels: “Chevalier-Montrachet”, “Bâtard-Montrachet” and “Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet”. The 7,89 hectares of the appellation “Montrachet” are providing 46 000 bottles per year. Rich and complex aromas, such as hazelnuts and honey, and a very long final in mouth are the main features of the appellation. The wines have a preserving capacity of 8 to 20 years. The name of “Montrachet” may come from “Mont Rachat” that means “rocky and naked hill” in the local patois. The Grand Cru “Montrachet” is indeed situated on a South-east hillside that received sunset sun beams during summer. These provide excellent conditions for the chardonnay to growth and to develop. The Romanée-Conti, Ramonet and Drouhin are the most-known owners of the appellation. We can also notice that the domain Marc Colin and Amiot-Bonfils also propose exceptional Montrachet, unfortunately in very limited quantities…
